Morpheus8 vs Fractional CO2 Laser: Which Is Better for me?
At Catalyst Medspa here in Tacoma WA, two of our most powerful skin rejuvenation treatments are Morpheus8 and the Solaria® CO₂ Laser. While both treatments stimulate collagen and improve overall skin quality, they work in very different ways and are designed to address different types of skin concerns both individually and when done in series.
Understanding the difference between these technologies can help you determine which treatment — or combination of treatments — may be best for your goals.
Morpheus vs Fractional CO2 Laser?
When it comes to skin tightening, tone and texture improvement, both Morpheus8 and CO2 Laser deliver noticeable results — but they do so in different ways. Understanding how each treatment works will help you make the right decision for your aesthetic goals.
Morpheus8 RF Microneedling
Morpheus8 is a revolutionary radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment that targets both fat reduction and skin tightening. It works by delivering controlled heat deep into the submental area, breaking down unwanted fat cells while simultaneously stimulating collagen production. It’s the perfect solution if you want an all-in-one treatment for both fat loss and anti-aging benefits.
Solaria Fractional CO2 Laser
Solaria CO₂ Laser is an advanced ablative fractional skin resurfacing laser that targets the surface and mid-layers of the skin. It uses precise columns of CO₂ laser energy to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen and elastin production. By resurfacing the skin, this treatment allows fresh, healthier skin to replace older damaged layers.
Benefits of Morpheus8 and CO2 Laser Treatments
Because Morpheus8 focuses on the deeper layers rather than removing the surface of the skin, it is considered a minimally invasive treatment with very little downtime.
Morpheus8 is ideal for:
Mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck or body
Early signs of aging
Jawline or facial contouring
Mild acne scarring/enlarged pore reduction
Preventative anti-aging collagen banking
Skin tightening during or after weight loss
Most patients complete a series of 3 treatments of the Morpheus8 for optimal results, with gradual improvement as collagen builds over time, and full results appear typically about 6-8 months after the very last treatment in a series. Depending on your treatment goals we adjust the depth and energy. Morpheus can be used on the abdomen to reduce fat by targeting deeper tissue.
Solaria CO₂ Laser is commonly used to treat:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Acne scars
Sun damage and pigmentation
Enlarged pores
Uneven skin texture
Rough or dull skin tone
Mild skin laxity
Because it is more intensive, CO₂ resurfacing typically requires slightly more downtime than the Morpheus8, but it can produce more dramatic improvements in skin texture and surface damage. We can also stack more gentle treatments over time to reduce downtime.
Morpheus8 vs Solaria CO2 Laser: Downtime
When it comes to downtime, both of these treatments are minimally invasive, but there are some differences when it comes to recovery.
CO2 Laser
Expect swelling, redness, and tenderness in the treated area for several days to a few weeks much like a sunburn.
Some people experience mild to moderate discomfort, but this typically subsides within a day or two.
The skin then becomes a little rough and itchy as the skin heals
Morpheus8
You may experience redness, swelling, and mild discomfort for a few days to a week.
Since Morpheus8 uses microneedling, skin may feel tight, dry, or slightly flaky as it heals.
Many people resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, making it the more convenient option.
In simple terms:
Morpheus8 tightens and remodels the skin from below, while CO₂ laser resurfaces and renews the skin from above. If you imagine your skin is a 3 layered cake, the Morpheus8 works on the spongy layers and the Solaria works on the frosting layers.
When Morpheus8 May Be the Better Choice
Morpheus8 is often recommended if you:
Want minimal downtime
Are noticing early signs of aging
Want to tighten loose skin
Prefer gradual, natural-looking improvement
Are interested in treatment for the face, neck, or body
Are hoping to delay or avoid surgical interventions
Many younger patients or those beginning preventative skin treatments start with Morpheus8
When Solaria CO₂ Laser May Be the Better Choice
Solaria CO₂ Laser may be recommended if you:
Have deeper wrinkles or etched lines
Want to improve acne scarring
Have significant sun damage or pigmentation
Want dramatic resurfacing results
Are comfortable with a longer healing period
For patients seeking a more transformative skin renewal treatment, CO₂ laser resurfacing can provide significant improvement in tone and texture.
Can You Combine Morpheus8 and CO₂ Laser?
In some cases, the best results come from combining treatments.
Because Morpheus8 works deeper in the skin while CO₂ laser improves the surface, they can complement each other to address multiple layers of aging and skin damage. Some treatment plans use CO₂ laser for resurfacing and Morpheus8 later to maintain collagen and tightening effects.
The Best Treatment Is Personalized
Every patient’s skin is different. The right treatment depends on factors like:
